Lupanare, the brothel

In Roman times the Lupanare (Latin for wolf or prostitute), that’s to say the brothels, were places dedicated to sexual pleasure.

Most brothels were usually in back alleys and consisted of a simple back room of an inn. The rooms of prostitutes were also accessible directly from the street or, when on the first floor via an outside staircase.

The space dedicated to the rooms was maximized, there was a raised bed in masonry on  top of which a mattress was placed. The decoration present in the rooms usually were murals depicting erotic scenes. In ancient Pompeii brothels were quite common but often disguised as taverns.
